Inglorious Basterds (2009)

Nazi occupied France, and a young Jewish refugee Shosanna Dreyfus witnesses the slaughter of her family by Colonel Hans Landa. Narrowly escaping with her life, she plots her revenge several years later when German war hero Fredrick Zoller quickly takes an interest in her and arranges an illustrious movie premiere at the theater she now runs. With the promise of every major Nazi officer in attendance, the event catches the attention of the “Basterds”, a group of Jewish-American guerrilla soldiers led by the ruthless Lt. Aldo Raine. As the relentless executioners advance and the conspiring young girl’s plans are set in motion, their paths will cross for a fateful evening that will shake the very annals of history.

Sergei Dvortsevoy - Tulpan (2008)

Tulpan is the feature film debut of Sergei Dvortsevoy, who has earned an international reputation over the past decade for his lyrical and heartfelt documentaries focused primarily on life in his native Kazakhstan. Exuding the same love of landscape and interest in the details and habits of daily life as the documentaries, Tulpan tells the story of a young Kazakh man returning to the Hunger Steppe after his military service with the goal of becoming a shepherd. Hoping to marry into a family with a herd, the awkward young man must first win over the object of his affection –the Tulpan of the film’s title—who refuses his advances. Dvortsevoy’s attention to the cadence of life on the steppe and the appeal of his actors – most of whom had not lived on the steppe before being cast in the film – give a rare energy to this remarkable film, which evinces both a rigorous intelligence and the big-hearted appeal of Chaplin. Yet behind Tulpan’s winning charm looms the larger question of whether the traditional nomadic existence remains a viable option for younger Kazakhs, and what will become of the region itself.

"Tulpan” is an amazing film. It shows such an unfamiliar world, it might as well be Mars. This is a place where the horizon is a straight line against the sky in every direction. There are no landmarks, no signs, no roads. No vegetation grows much more than a foot or two. It is dry, dusty, cold and windy, and nothing seems to be green. This is the world “Tulpan” takes place in, and I can think of only one other story that would feel at home there: “Waiting for Godot.”

Yet the people love it. They are yurt dwellers in Kazakhstan, the largest landlocked nation on Earth. They live on what is named in the credits as the Hungersteppe and raise sheep. We meet a young sailor named Asa, discharged from the Russian navy, who has come here to live with his sister Samal, her husband, Ondas, and their children. As the story opens, Asa, Ondas and his buddy Boni are negotiating with a poker-faced man and his hostile wife for the hand of their daughter, Tulpan (“Tulip”). (Roger Ebert)

Synopsis:
From Jan Kounen, the French director of the violent cult actioner Dobermann, comes this loose adaptation of Jean "Mobius" Giraud's comic series Blueberry. Vincent Cassel stars as Mike Blueberry, a lawman whose past comes back to haunt him when his town is invaded by the nefarious Blount (Michael Madsen), the man responsible for his first love's murder. Led by a German con man by the name of Prosit (an unrecognizable Eddie Izzard), Blount and his crew search for an ancient treasure buried deep within Indian tribal grounds, while Blueberry and his Indian friend Runi (Temuera Morrison) race to keep the land sacred and stop the thieves by any means possible. Featuring Juliette Lewis and her father, Geoffrey Lewis, in supporting roles, the film sports a solid American cast that boasts an additional performance by Colm Meaney and a rare appearance by none other than Ernest Borgnine.

La Paz River, Vara Blanca, Costa Rica — The crater lake of the Poas Volcano drains from 9,000 feet into this high altitude cloudforest ravine. Stepping downward through a series of five waterfalls, we descend as the sun rises. Rays of light catch suspended water particles from the falling water, as green threads of life cling to sodden cliff walls. From within its pupa, an owl butterfly emerges with the increasing warmth of day, pumping fluid into its silken wings. Through the last rock opening, the water and sun burst out and down towards a restful pool, the famous La Paz waterfall.

Synopsis:
En 208 après J.-C., l'empereur Han Xiandi règne sur la Chine pourtant divisée en trois royaumes rivaux. L'ambitieux Premier ministre Cao Cao rêve de s'installer sur le trône d'un empire unifié, et se sert de Han Xiandi pour mener une guerre sans merci contre Shu, le royaume du sud-ouest dirigé par l'oncle de l'empereur, Liu Bei. Liu Bei dépêche Zhuge Liang, son conseiller militaire, comme émissaire au royaume de Wu pour tenter de convaincre le roi Sun Quan d'unir ses forces aux siennes. A Wu, Zhuge Liang rencontre le vice-roi Zhou Yu. Très vite, les deux hommes deviennent amis et concluent un pacte d'alliance.
Furieux d'apprendre que les deux royaumes se sont alliés, Cao Cao envoie une force de 800 000 soldats et 2 000 bateaux pour les écraser. L'armée campe dans la Forêt du Corbeau, de l'autre côté du fleuve Yangtze qui borde la Falaise Rouge où sont installés les alliés. Face à l'écrasante supériorité logistique de Cao Cao, le combat semble joué d'avance, mais Zhou Yu et Zhuge Liang ne sont pas décidés à se laisser faire... Dans un déluge de puissance et de génie tactique, la bataille de la Falaise Rouge va rester comme la plus célèbre de l'Histoire et changer le destin de la Chine pour toujours.

In 208 A.D., in the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd Prime Minster Cao Cao convinced the fickle Emperor Han the only way to unite all of China was to declare war on the kingdoms of Xu in the west and East Wu in the south. Thus began a military campaign of unprecedented scale, led by the Prime Minister, himself. Left with no other hope for survival, the kingdoms of Xu and East Wu formed an unlikely alliance. Numerous battles of strength and wit ensued, both on land and on water, eventually culminating in the battle of Red Cliff. During the battle, two thousand ships were burned, and the course of Chinese history was changed forever.

Particular highlights include Grappelli's own very lovely composition titled "Ballade," and a fine medley consisting of "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "I Got Rhythm."
