This cd really is a wonder. the mendelssohn and bruch concertos have never received such wonderful treatment as kennedy lavishes, in this all-round flawless cd. the pace of the pieces is just perfect, never rushed but never languid, and the technical skill of kennedy is, as ever, second to none. the intonation is absolutely spot on in all 3 performances. as for expression and tone, in my opinion no-one does it better than kennedy. just listen to the opening bars of the mendelssohn for evidence those who dismiss kennedy as all image should listen to this and rethink. he really is a violin genius, and theres no clearer indication than on this disc. i cannot recommend it highly enough

Menuhin was a significant force in the rehabilitation of Furtwangler after the War - Furtwangler had often conducted for Hitler and the senior Nazis and his role was much questioned (it is still to some extent a matter of debate). Whether that fact, interesting as it is, has any bearing on these peformances or not, they are quite marvellous, particularly the Beethoven, combining on the part of both artistes a blend of firm control and an attractive improvisatory quality which is very very compelling, For its time the recording is excellent, fully enjoyable, and this fully justifies itself as a 'Great Recordings of the Century' release - very warmly recommended.

Nigel Kennedy (born December 28, 1956 in Brighton, England)is a violinist and violist. He was a pupil at the Yehudi Menuhin School, under Menuhin himself, and later at the Juilliard School under Dorothy DeLay. Kennedy has done much to popularise classical music, particularly among young people. He has also performed and recorded most of the major violin concerti. Kennedy expresses concern for the immediate appeal of live performance, and often records entire works or movements in single 'takes' to preserve this sense in his recordings. He also introduces improvisatory elements in his performances, as in his Jimi Hendrix-inspired cadenza to the eethoven violin concerto and his jazz and fusion recordings. Away from his musical career, Kennedy is a supporter of football clubs Aston Villa and Cracovia. Recently he has appeared on Cracovia's 100th anniversary in club replica kit.
