Naseer Shamma - Le luth de Baghdad ("The Baghdad Lute")

Naseer Shamma is a renowned Iraqi musician and oud player.
He was born in 1963 in Kut, a village on the Tigris River. He began studying the oud at the age of 12 in Baghdad, following in the footsteps of Jamil and Munir Bashir. When he was 11-years old, Shamma saw an oud for the first time, in the hands of a stylish music teacher. Although Shamma's father, a shop owner, was religiously conservative, he did not object to his son's artistic ambitions. In 1985, Shamma played his own compositions at his first concert, attended by several renowned Iraqi artists. At the time, he worked closely with "the emir of the oud," the late Iraqi master Munir Bashir. But Shamma wanted to blaze his own path. Master Munir invented the technique of contemplation with oud, but Shamma wanted his music to carry content, an idea or image that is shocking. He received his diploma from the Baghdad Academy of Music in 1987. He began to teach oud after three years at the academy, as well as continuing his own studies. Shamma has composed music for films, plays and television. Between 1993 and 1998 he taught oud the Higher Institute of Music in Tunisia, and in 1999 he took the post of Director of the Arab Centre for the Oud in Cairo. He performs on the oud in a manner which combines traditional methods with his own modern compositions. Naseer Shamma has also created an eight-string oud or lute following the manuscript of the 9th-century music theorist Al-Farabi. This new design (eight instead of six strings) expanded the musical range of the oud and gave it a distinct tonality. His innovations also include a new method of playing the oud with only one hand, which he invented so that children and soldiers injured during the Gulf War could play and enjoy the oud.

Naseer Shamma (Arranger), Naseer Shamma (Main Performer), Naseer Shamma (Interpretation), Rabah Mezouane (Coordination), Cécile Boquien (Coordination), Saïda Fellache (Coordination), Farida Mekki (Coordination), Mohamed Métalsi (Series Concept), Christine Rinieri (Coordination), Habib Yammine (Liner Notes), Delia Morris (Translation), Dorothée Engel (Coordination) Naseer Shamma "A Singing Hand"

Munir Bashir - Maître Du Luth Arabe[3CD SET]

Irak: MUNIR BASHIR - Maître du luth arabe "Master of the Arab lute"[3CD SET]
As a passionate defender of Arab music, Munir Bachir was in constant rebellion against the misrepresentation of this music and its use for commercial ends. He spent several years fighting to establish his lute as a solo recital instrument and travelled the world as a true ambassador for Arab classical music, bringing it to specialists as well as to a larger audience. Munir Bachir improvised from fully authenticated sources. As much creator as performer, his music was forever evolving, never repetitive.
A master of the mode-based, raga-like Arabic Taqsim, Munir Bashir transformed the oud (Arabic lute) into an important solo instrument. His improvisations inspired comparison to jazz's most inventive players. According to www.rootsworld.com, Bashir's "improvisations (were) elegantly melodic. He (tended) to favor short phrases and certain moments remind me of the kind of development one might find in unaccompanied saxophone solos by Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell." Descended from a long line of musicians, Bashir was shown the basics of the Arab lute, by his father, as a child. He continued his musical training at the Baghdad Institute of Music, which he entered at the age of six. Bashir's musical career was balanced by his experiences as an educator. Receiving a doctorate in musicology in 1955, he began lecturing for the folk arts department of Budapest's Academy of Sciences. He eventually rose to directorial positions at the Higher Institute of Music in Baghdad and the Music Service of Iraqi Public Radio. Previously unreleased recordings found by Bashir's children shortly after his death in October 1997 were released as Raga Roots. Bashir's musical legacy is continued by his son, Omar. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide .

Sabah Fakhri - Mahragan bet El Din Vol.2

Sabah Fakhri (born 1933): is a renowned and venerated singer from Aleppo in northern Syria. He modified and popularized the then-fading form of traditional Arabic music, Muwashahat and Koodood. He is well known for his powerful and beautiful voice, impeccable execution of Maqamat and harmony, as well as his charismatic performances. To many music admirers around the world, he represents the epitome and essence of authentic Tarab. He enrolled into the Academy of Arabic Music of Aleppo then to the Academy of Damascus, from which he graduated in 1948. Then in Cairo, Egypt, he studied under the music masters of that time, and since then he started performing concerts in Syria. He soon became famous all over the Arab World. He also performed many concerts in Europe and the Americas. His name is enshrined in the Guinness Book of Records for his prowess in Caracas, where he sang for 10 hours without a pause. He was a member of the Syrian parliament for a period of time as a representative of artists. Sabah Fakhri is one of the best Syrian singers ever, and has been considered as the top of the singing pyramid there. He has always criticized modern music, even classicals with modern instruments. He wasn't happy either with some of the music Mohammed Abdel Wahab and Farid Al Attrach composed because of that same reason. Fakhri was awarded the Syrian Order of Merit of Excellent Degree by President Bashar al-Assad in recognition of his achievements in serving and his role in reviving the artistic heritage in Syria.

Marcel Khalife - Caress / Mouda'aba (2004)

Marcel Khalife - Caress / Mouda'aba (2004)
MP3
192Kbps
RS.com: 78mb
Genre: Middle Eastern / Jazz / World Fusion

“I do not use the West to get to the West,” said Marcel Khalife who is featured on the new CD, Caress/Mouda’aba (Nagam Records), and on a 12-city tour that will hit most major U.S. markets in October and November, 2004. “If the new world order gives me the culture of MacDonalds and Pepsi Cola, I question that. Those things disappear after a short while. What we are doing is a project that will take years and years.”

Khalife’s mission began before Israel seized his cassettes upon invading his country, Lebanon, in 1982. “Since I was born,” he says, “I’ve felt I had a rebel’s soul within me. I rejected things that might be inherited, but that were wrong.” Born into a Christian family, Khalife—who plays the oud, an Arabic lute, has always been a voice of reconciliation, peace, and hope. During Lebanon’s civil war, he risked his life performing in bombed out concert halls, bringing his music and the great poetry of the Arab world to his war-ravished country.

At the same time, Khalife has been stretching the boundaries of his instrument and Arabic music. Oud playing was traditionally constrained by the strict techniques that governed its playing. Skillful musicians like Khalife have freed the instrument from those constraints greatly expanding its possiblities. About his latest CD and tour, Khalife says, “This work attempts to elevate Arabic music to a level that allows it to express profound human emotions, not by mere performance, but by empowering the music to mature and develop into a universal language of expression.

Allmusic.com:
The oud, or Arabic lute, is so integral to Arabic culture that it was used by ancient musicians and philosophers to define scales and served as a foundation for Arab music as a whole. Hence, it's no coincidence that Marcel Khalife achieved folk hero status playing this emblem of Arabic culture. So inspiring was his music that when Israel invaded his native Lebanon in 1982, Israeli officials confiscated his cassettes, lest he inspire a resurgence of Arabic pride. Peace, reconciliation and boundary-breaking are the hallmarks of Marcel Khalife's music. Born into a Christian family in an Arabic culture, he uses musical influences from both traditions to create a sound that is both soothing and stimulating. An entrancing, nine-track CD,Caress reflects Khalife's multi-faceted musicianship as well as his ability to connect diverse musical influences. Weaving traditional instruments such as the oud, tabla, riq and mazhar with western mainstays of the piano, bass and violin, he blurs genres for a universal sound. While his virtuoso oud playing shines on the title track, "With All My Love" features a quirky piano interpretation of "Happy Birthday," and "Chaza" showcases a stunning violin solo by Omar Guey. Caress showcases an elegant musical marriage of Arabic, classical and jazz influences for a complex, yet accessible sound.

Fairuz in Festival Hall London

Fairuz - At The Royal Festival Hall London 1986
15 February 1992 | Arabic - World | ~192kbps 44100 kHz Joint Stereo | 13 Tracks | ~97 Mb
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At The Royal Festival Hall London 1986

Imagine you're standing in front of Royal Festival Hall in London on 13th of June 1986. It's 7:30 PM. It doesn't take long to realize it's one of the greatest summer nights of that year. Fairuz is performing in there. It really is something. While the Olympia album had the Rahbani brothers influence, this one was conducted by Ziad. The musical arrangements of the songs are very clear to be of Ziad. It seems that these same arrangements gave Ziad a lot of help when he started working on the To Assy album. If not for the date on the album, you'd think this concert was performed after the release of the To Assy album. The quality of the album is great and like the Olympia album, the clarity makes you feel you're there. Ziad played on the Piano and he did great by managing to play with the Orchestra in perfect harmony. He also made Khodni beautifully. Really amazing, only the Piano with Fairuz. Then Beaoulou Saghair Baladi starts and the applause gets warmer and warmer. Definitely the album doesn't include the entire concert. Maybe they cut out the other instrumentals and the choir songs. After all, How can a Fairuz concert be 45 minutes only? The booklet has articles in the three languages (Arabic, French and English) as well as pictures from the concert.

All Songs were written by: The Rahbani Brothers except:

The music of 1,3(and lyrics),7,8 by Ziad Rahbani.
Poem of 8 by Talal Haydar
Music and lyrics of 13 by Sayd Darwish
All music arranged by Ziad Rahbani except 11 and 13.
