La Paz River, Vara Blanca, Costa Rica — The crater lake of the Poas Volcano drains from 9,000 feet into this high altitude cloudforest ravine. Stepping downward through a series of five waterfalls, we descend as the sun rises. Rays of light catch suspended water particles from the falling water, as green threads of life cling to sodden cliff walls. From within its pupa, an owl butterfly emerges with the increasing warmth of day, pumping fluid into its silken wings. Through the last rock opening, the water and sun burst out and down towards a restful pool, the famous La Paz waterfall.

When pieces of Chinese porcelain were first seen in the West, they were so rare and exquisite that they very quickly became more valuable than gold. Why? Because Europeans really had no idea how porcelain was made, and the medieval Italian merchants who first brought porcelain to Europe couldn't believe it was man made. The only thing that they could compare it to was a cowry shell, because a cowry shell has that same exquisite smooth surface as a piece of porcelain. In Italian, a cowry shell is called a "Porcellino" - a little pig - because it kind of looks like a little suckling pig, hence our word 'porcelain'. The Europeans were immediately obsessed with the secret of porcelain manufacture, leading to all kinds of crazy theories: Some thought it was crushed eggshells; others thought it was a special fish paste, which they would leave to ripen in the earth for one hundred years. No wonder it would be centuries before Europeans would even begin to unravel the great mystery of porcelain. It took the Chinese themselves thousands of years to discover the secret of porcelain - the product of a search for perfection which began more than six millennia ago.

One young aborigine, the son of a tribal elder, works today as a park ranger at Kakadu, and the tape follows his efforts to reconcile the traditions of his ancestors with his life in modern society. As one would expect from National Geographic, this tape features astonishing nature photography as well as solidly researched material on the Gagudju people. The scenes of the elders trying to pass on their lore are touching, as is the mention that one elder often cries at night because he realizes he is the last of his people, as the younger generation no longer undergoes the initiation rituals. This tape would be worthwhile for the gorgeous photography alone, but it is also an intelligent last look at a vanishing culture. –Robert J. McNamara

Luxe suprême, mais aussi véritable coup de cœur, l'île privée est le refuge idéal. Un paradis à l'abri des paparazzi et des gêneurs, pour quelques centaines de millions de dollars. Georges Cohen, un français qui a fait fortune dans l'informatique, a invité les caméras de l'émission dans sa demeure aux Caraïbes. Avec sa femme Martine, ils ont construit de toutes pièces leur espace de liberté.
Jouet favori des milliardaires, le méga-yacht, 70 mètres minimum s'il vous plait, a le vent en poupe. A travers un nouveau reportage, Zone Interdite a suivi trois passionnés qui ont façonné leur bateau à leur image. Certains exècrent le clinquant, comme cet anglais fou de compétition nautique : son magnifique yacht lui permet de mettre les voiles pour aller plus vite et plus loin. D'autres carburent à l'or massif et aux incrustations de diamants, comme ces riches chinois de Hong-Kong qui passent leur vie à bord de leur palace flottant.
Mais tout ce beau monde vont devoir bientôt affronter une crise sans précédent. Si les Français moyens sont préoccupés par leur pouvoir d'achat ou l'augmentation du prix du carburant, nos amis les milliardaires, eux, doivent faire face à la pénurie de caviar qui menace les tables des gourmets. En effet, qu'il soit d'Iran, de Russie ou de Gironde, l'esturgeon est une espèce en voie de disparition, malgré les quotas imposés aux pays producteurs. A Téhéran, les entrepôts officiels sont vides. Dans les caves secrètes de Petrossian, à Paris, les meilleurs grains se vendent 5000 € le kilo !

Nous remontons dans le temps... 400 000 ans en arrière pour être précis...
Nous commençons par suivre des moments de la vie d'une tribu d'Homo erectus : chasse à l'autruche, accouchement...
Vers - 100 000 ans nous reprenons le cours de la narration avec les premiers Homo sapiens.
Le documentaire présente ensuite différents moments forts de l'expansion de notre espèce, sur plusieurs régions comme l'Afrique, l'Asie ou encore l' Europe...
Beaucoup de thèmes sont abordés comme le chamanisme, les multiples rencontres avec Homo neanderthalensis, les débuts de la navigation, l'utilisation des propulseurs, les débuts de l'art rupestre...
Une scène en particulier présente une chasse au mammouth réalisée en commun par quelques Homo sapiens et néanderthaliens. Réalisée en image de synthèse, elle nous permet de visualiser ce qui devait être un moment très fort dans la vie de nos ancêtres.
Le film montre également les évènements qui ont eu un impact très fort sur la vie quotidienne de ces hominides : la fonte des glaces (-12 000 ans), les débuts de l'agriculture et de l'élevage.
